View your Fountas and Pinnell (F&P) to understand whether students are meeting grade level expectations for reading.
- At district and school level, Schoolzilla will show the percent of students who are meeting or not meeting grade level expectations. By default, Schoolzilla uses the recommended grade level expectations for F&P per grade level and test period. Grade level expectations can be configured loaded using the Expectations template in My Data.
- For each student, Schoolzilla will show the independent reading level and whether this level exceeds, meets, approaches or does not meet expectations.

What can be configured?
- Expectation levels per test period can be configured by uploading via the Expectations template in My Data.
As with all metrics, you can configure the name and description in Metric Settings. - Test periods can be configured by simply entering desired test periods names in the "TestPeriod" column of the Performance file and the "AdministrationWindow" column of the Expectations file. Please be sure that the test period names are consistent across both files. If you do not choose to upload an Expectations file, please be sure to set your testing periods in the Performance file to be Fall, Winter, and Spring.
- The metric can be updated to reflect a student's instructional level. Submit a support ticket indicating you'd like to make this change. See more information below on how independent vs. instructional scores are computed using data you load into the Performance file. NOTE: Currently, only one F&P metric is able to be displayed in Schoolzilla (i.e., you cannot have a tile for fluency scores).
How do I upload data to Schoolzilla?
In order to send Schoolzilla your Fountas & Pinnell data, please follow the steps below:
There are two templates that must be completed: performance scores and expectations levels.
- One contains performance scores. Please complete this template with all student scores.
Please download and complete the test_fp_performance_rawdata.xlsx attachment. Once completed, please make sure to save the Sheet1 tab as a .csv. Note: test periods should not exceed 25 characters. - The second template is to define you level expectations data. It is important to follow the instructions in the template to properly create your level thresholds. This only needs to be uploaded once, unless you want to make a change to it. Please download and complete the test_fp_expectations_rawdata.xlsx attachment. Once completed, please make sure to save the Sheet1 tab as a .csv.
Once you have finished filling out your templates please upload them to the Fountas & Pinnell My Data form.
Do I need to complete all of the fields in the Performance template?
No, but you must include all columns in the header row of your file, even if they are not populated. The required columns on the performance data template are:
- SystemStudentID,
- SystemSchoolID,
- GradeLevelNumeric,
- TestPeriod,
- TestDate,
- TextType,
- TextLevel,
- Passed.
For more information about these columns and example data, refer to the first sheet in the template download. Skill-level scores (e.g., Fluency, Reading Rate) will be available in the Test Scores data block for Enterprise customers only.
Do I need to submit separate Expectation files for each grade level?
No. Please enter 1 row per grade level and expectational level in the same file.
If a student's score qualifies them for multiple proficiency levels based on the expectation file, how will the connector choose? In other words, which proficiency level will be assigned?
The F&P connector will always give preference to the highest proficiency level for which a student score qualifies them. For example, for the first F&P assessment of the year (e.g.; T1), if an 8th grade student scores a Z, and per the expectations file they could be designated as On Grade Level or Near Grade Level the connector will assign On Grade Level.
How many scores should I enter in the Performance template per student per test period? How do you determine which scores are instructional vs. independent?
Schoolzilla will compute two cycle scores per student - an independent level and an instructional level. A cycle represents a test period, such as Fall. Here are a few options for how many scores to load per student and how Schoolzilla handles each case.
RECOMMENDED - Option 1: Submit a student's scores for level(s) passed AND level(s) failed.
- Independent level = highest level marked as Passed = 1 per test period.
- Instructional level = one level above highest level marked as Passed = 1 per test period.
- TestScoreType = cycle. (TestScoreType refers to a column in the data blocks available for Enterprise customers).
Option 2: If you only submit scores that represent the level(s) that a student passed
- Independent level = same as option 1
- Instructional level = same as option 1
- TestScoreType = cycle (incomplete). This status of this cycle is incomplete because we do not have enough information to know if testing stopped mid-session or if this in fact represents the student's instructional level. By default, Schoolzilla metrics will use both cycle and cycle (incomplete) scores.
Option 3: If you only submit scores that represent the level(s) that a student failed
- Independent level = level immediately below the lowest level that is marked as Passed =0 per test period.
- Instructional level = lowest level marked as Passed = 0 per test period.
- TestScoreType = cycle (incomplete). This status of this cycle is incomplete because we do not have enough information to know if testing stopped mid-session or if this in fact represents the student's instructional level. By default, Schoolzilla metrics will use both cycle and cycle (incomplete) scores.
Are self-correction ratio scores supported?
Self-Correction Ratios are not currently supported.
We store my F&P data in my student information system (SIS). Does data from my SIS populate F&P metrics in Schoolzilla?
Unfortunately, no. You will need to load data via the template process.
