Our CAASPP connector supports Smarter Balanced ELA, Smarter Balanced Math, and the California Science Test (CAST); both overall and claim-level performance.
How We Connect
Download your CAASPP student data file following the instructions below:
- Log-in to the California Assessment System http://caaspp.ets.org.
- Go to the Reports section and scroll to the bottom.
- Select School and School Year and click Download Report.
- The download will be a zip file that includes both the .dat and .csv (caret-delimited file in this case) files.
- Submit the file (.dat* or .csv depending on year) using My Data.
*Note: dat files can be opened with a text editor such as Notepad++ or Sublime. Beginning in 20-21, Schoolzilla began only supporting the .csv file type after file inconsistencies with the .dat layout.
File layout specifications for each results file format are available from the CDE.

Mappings Overview
The information below summarizes where key data elements are loaded from across submitted Student Data Files. The column names referenced may not match the column name in the file exactly as this changes over time.
Key Field(s) | Mapping(s) |
System Student ID |
Scores are linked to students using the statewide_student_identifier column in the file. We match to students in the student information system using the following (in order of preference):
*See your student information system page for information on this mapping. |
System School ID |
Scores are linked to schools using the tested_school_codeN field in the file. This is matched to a school in My Schools using the State School ID, school match inferred based on where at least 90% of students tested were enrolled on the data of their test, or a manual override match implemented by our support team. Please contact support to resolve incorrect or failed matches. |
School Year | Scores are linked to school years using the file schema selected when uploading the file. |
Proficiency Score | Values are populated using the achievement_levels field in the file. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Are any scores excluded when results are loaded?
Schoolzilla only loads scores that the state counts for accountability reporting purposes;
- For ELA and Math; "Student was enrolled during the active testing window, completed the test, and has met completion/attemptedness criteria." (Include Indicator = Y)
- For CAST, "Student was enrolled during the active testing window, completed the test, and has met completion/attemptedness criteria." (Include Indicator = Y). For 2017-18 and earlier, scores with Include Indicator = T are also loaded.
Is there a growth metric for SBAC / CAASPP?
No, because students in CA do not receive growth scores. As of summer 2021, CA has been one of the few states that does not have an individual growth score for students based on their CAASPP performance (see DQC reference). In summer/fall 2021, CA released information about its new growth model. They have calculated historic growth scores from 2016-2018 but specifically said the data are not actionable. They are intending to release student growth scores in 2024, once they have 3 consecutive years of SBAC testing. See more information here, including slide deck and notes from 9/13/21 webinar. We will consider building a SBAC/CAASPP growth metric when CDE recommends using this metric (after 2023-24 testing).
